Meet Ben Parsons: Leading the Next Generation of Conservation at Black Forest Wildlife Preserve

Updated: Sep 3, 2025

When Sussex Academy student Ben Parsons received the 2025 Governor’s Young Environmentalist Award, he wasn’t just being recognized for his dedication to nature — he was shining a spotlight on one of Delaware’s most unique conservation areas: the Black Forest Wildlife Preserve in Sussex County.

Ben has played a major role in preserving 60 acres of land within the Black Forest Wildlife Coexist Program, a sanctuary where wildlife and humans can live in harmony. The preserve is home to towering pines, hidden wetlands, and diverse habitats that protect native birds, reptiles, mammals, indigenous plants, and critical pollinator populations.

A Mission Worth Protecting

The Black Forest Wildlife Preserve is dedicated to:

  • Protecting native species and ecosystems

  • Providing safe havens for migratory and endangered wildlife

  • Promoting responsible land stewardship through education and community action

Ben embodies that mission. Through his Sussex Teens Are Responsible Stewards (STARS) program and partnership with Contractors for a Cause, he has organized community cleanups, native plantings, and wildlife workshops, inspiring others to take ownership of Delaware’s natural heritage.

Education, Action, and Leadership

Ben’s efforts extend beyond the preserve. His work with STARS has connected local teens with hands-on environmental projects, showing that small actions — like planting native species or removing litter — can have a lasting impact.

His commitment has also earned him a junior board member nomination for the Black Forest Wildlife Coexist Foundation, where he will help guide conservation strategies, youth outreach, and environmental education initiatives.

How You Can Get Involved

The Black Forest Wildlife Preserve offers many ways for the community to participate:

  • Volunteer for habitat restoration or events

  • Join a guided wildlife walk to learn more about native species

  • Attend seasonal workshops on conservation and stewardship

  • Become a donor or sponsor to support preservation efforts

“One person can spark change,” says Ben. His journey proves that when passion meets action, the results can transform both people and places.
